On March 24, 1942 The Flying Tigers conducted a bombing raid on the Japanese airbase at Chiang Mai.During the raid pilot William "Black Mac" McGarry's Curtis P40 was hit by ground fire. He attempted to make it back to his base in Burma but was forced to bail out over Thailand. He was captured and turned over to the Japanese. Later he spirited out of Thailand by the Free Thai forces. He was picked up at sea by a by a PBY Catalina. In 1992 the remains of his P40 was found in the jungle of Northern Thailand where it had remained undisturbed for 50 years.
